The Most Responsible Party Song

Montell Jordan deserves a high honor within the circles of R&B and MADD.

No, not WC's group - that was the MAAD Circle. I'm talking Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Before 'The Truth' anti-smoking campaign, MADD was a big force in the PSA realm. A real mutha for ya urged kids and young adults to think twice before getting behind the wheel after partaking in the spirits. (You don't wanna disappoint your momma, do you?!)

So how does Montell fit into this hodge podge of an intro?

Well, at 6'8", he stands tall as a paradigm of virtue for partygoers from the Southside to the Westside. Well... hmm. Sort of? Let me start over.

If it counts for anything (spoiler: it does), Mr. Jordan wrote the most responsible party song of all time!!

"This Is How We Do It" was the crossover smash lead single from Jordan's debut album, also titled This Is How We Do It. Released on Def Jam in 1995, the beat sampled a cautionary tale - "Children's Story" - by Slick Rick. Montell himself weaves a narrative of an awesome Friday night in Los Angeles where friends and foes alike are having a good time together.

Amidst all the hands in the air, a buzzed Montell fully endorsed finding a DD telling the "designated driver [to] take the keys to my truck".

Maybe it was just a normal duty for Montell's crew, but as Rap blew up in the early 90's, it was all about the sex, drugs and rock 'n roll with no repercussions... until it was too late. (I see you, Bobby Brown!) So for Montell to fit this mundane part of the party predominantly into the lyrics of his biggest song says something about his character and willingness to look out for his friends and family. [For real - I'm going there!]

Jordan wasn't in your face at all like TLC and their safety-pinned collection of jimmy hats. And I'm guessing he never filmed any commercials for MAAD, DARE or helped that lady in the kitchen smash things with her frying pan, but one small line may have saved hundreds of lives - drunk drivers and innocent motorists.

It’s possible he merely used the phrase since it rhymed this with the preceding line… but kudos to you, Montell, for sneaking a responsible virtue into a Jock Jams anthem!

In all seriousness, there are two points to make: 1) "This Is How We Do It" is a bomb song that should be bumped at every party and 2) don't drink and drive!
