Sioux City Hip-Hop Trio Perseveres to Release New Album

“These things take time.” –The Top Civilian

The Gateway Drug finally started to get the ball rolling when releasing a debut album- 'times new roman'- in 2008 after carefully forming the sphere for years. A hundred shows across four states later, the boys decided it was time to empty the notebooks and head back to the lab for a sophomore CD, taking from years of lessons learned to better perfect the craft.

Then life got in the way.

The birth of kids, bitter break-ups, career changes and even a marriage proposal left The Gateway Drug agenda in limbo. The responsibilities of maturation set in heavy on all three group members, but the passion for creation didn't die; it just lay dormant. Vocalists Corey “MC Brew” Brubaker and “The Top Civilian” Eric Osterholm each had a lot left to say and deejay / producer Noel “Poyo” Bockholt had many more melodies and rhythms left in his head.

The breaking point gave way and a levy of creativity finally burst into new songs in late 2012. The subject matter may be a little more heavy-handed and introspective but mind-bending music is still The Gateway Drug’s trademark. Laying fiercely sharp but potently poetic lyrics over booming jungle breakbeats, ‘Two Dogs and a Dragon’ delivers topics you’d hear preached from the pulpit and shouted from the street corner.

Now to celebrate the seven-track labor of love (whose title references the signs of the Chinese calendar that the fellas were born under), The Gateway Drug has invited friends from Sioux City, Colorado and South Dakota to share the stage at Bill’s Bar Friday November 8 for an album release concert.

‘Two Dogs and a Dragon’ is available for free (or name your own price) download online HERE.
